Considering its vital role as the political arm of the enduring liberation movement, it is crucial to articulate our position regarding this declaration.
Regrettably, the Himalayan Declaration stands in contrast to the foundational vision and objectives of the Global Tamil Federation (GTF). Originally formed for noble causes, the GTF has now fallen under the influence of a select few individuals, operating with arbitrary motives. Similarly, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) mirrors this trend, drawing severe criticism both within Eelam and among the diaspora for deviating from fundamental democratic principles in making this declaration.
The actions of representatives from GTF and its affiliate, CTC, have drawn condemnation from Canadian officials for contravening established Canadian foreign policy. Their engagement with Mahinda Rajapaksa, a figure sanctioned by the Canadian government for war crimes, has sparked intense outrage among Canadian Tamils worldwide.
Crucially, this declaration lacks endorsement from the majority of political parties representing the Tamils in the Tamil homeland. It was formulated without securing the mandate of the Tamil Diaspora, rendering it an invalid proclamation by unrepresentative bodies. Such unilateral actions undermine the genuine aspirations of our people and carry no legitimacy.
The intended purpose of this declaration seems aimed at shielding the Sri Lankan government from accountability for brutal war crimes. It seeks to uphold military figures involved in these atrocities, hailed as heroes by the Sinhalese, while attempting to create a façade of compliance with International Monetary Fund directives amid the country’s severe economic crisis. It’s crucial to recognize that certain Tamil organizations are being manipulated to secure IMF assistance, serving as mere pawns in this geopolitical game.
The influential Buddhist Maha Sangha, a driving force in Sri Lankan politics, aims to safeguard Ranil Wickremesinghe, perceived as the West’s favored figure capable of steering the nation through economic turmoil. Simultaneously, Western powers seek to bolster their geopolitical foothold in South Asia by supporting Wickremesinghe’s presence. Unfortunately, this entire declaration aligns with the interests of those responsible for the plight of the Tamil nation and serves the expansionist goals of Western nations, offering no recourse for Tamil people to attain their rightful political aspirations.
Thamileela Arasiyalthurai earnestly urges all organizations vested in the welfare of the Tamil community to unite and operate prudently, steering clear of such deceptive traps. It is imperative to act with keen awareness to avoid falling victim to misleading agendas detrimental to our collective cause.
